Last night the top two teams of the newly formed Sling Shot and Drop Target conferences faced off in the league finals. In the Sling Shot conference, the former champion Mutants were the top seed against their brethren the Balls of Fury, both of whom called Pioneers home this past season. While technically, this was the Fury’s first finals match, this group had been there before, and won, under another name. Fittingly, the match went down to a tie breaker on Funhouse, and the Mutants emerged victorious to reclaim the title.
In the Drop Target conference, the Satellite Weights of Jackbar defeated the Aristocrats of Bar Great Harry 9 to 7. Both of these teams were in the playoffs for the first time, and, for the Aristocrats, this came in their second season after debuting in the league 3 and 7! A pretty impressive turnaround for this sophomore team, and a strong showing by both teams.
Despite some reservations, it’s clear that this year’s reshuffling of teams was a success. In addition to teams playing new opponents and visiting new venues this season, the new breakdown, for the most part, provided a more evenly dispersed competitive field. In the Sling Shot Conference, 3 of the 8 playoff teams were former B Division teams, and in the Drop Target Conference, 6 of the 8 playoff teams were in the playoffs for the first time! Sure, my team tanked this season, but we all had a great time, and I loved the challenge and diversity our new opponents offered us this season. Moreover, I learned a valuable lesson, if I am ever to beat Koi, I must get him to drink!
