Announcement | December 22, 2014
On Wednesday, December 17th we marked the end of the Fall 2014 season of the Pinball NYC league and celebrated the holidays with a big party at the Fifth Estate. The festivities included awesome live music by Fish Detective — featuring league teammates Brian (on drums) and Ram (on bass). Of course, the evening also included the presentation of trophies and awards to our league winners. It was a wonderful close to another wonderful season.
In the Upper Playfield Conference, the Terror-wrists returned to their dominating form by sweeping Hard Plunge in the finals and earning their second trophy. In a conversation with the Terror-wrist team captain, Jon, just hours before the finals, I learned that he would be visiting Creek and Cave for the first time that evening to play in the finals. That is to say, there was no practicing for this guy, which is a testament to the raw talent of his team. No doubt Francesco will do some more recruiting during his day job at Modern Pinball, so don’t be surprised if these two teams meet in another championship in the near future.
The Lower Playfield Conference finals was a hard fought match that featured a head-to-head face off between two former teammates and the first time participation of the league’s commissioner. Will, of the Roseanne Jackbars, and Ed “Red”, of the Cartel, both played for the lovable Bumper? Hardly Knew Her! team of the former Satellite Lounge. Since that team dissolved they have each gone separate ways, and each played a very strong roll in the success of their current teams, and each fought hard in the finals. While the Cartel was able to go ahead 6-2 in the doubles rounds, they were unable to put the final nail in the coffin during singles. Nevertheless, they did win two more points thereby forcing a tie-breaker game. The home team, the Roseanne Jackbars, wisely chose game play on the Walking Dead — a game the Cartel is largely unfamiliar with. However, Ed’s first ball set up a strong second ball by teammate Aaron of the Cartel. This put the pressure on the Jackbar’s final player who simply could not make up the difference. As onlooker, and one of the original league players, Chris of Thank You, Enjoy the Show noted, “it only took you nine seasons to win, commish!” That it did, but it was worth the wait.
Special thanks go out to our league sponsors who donated prizes to our winners this season. I am very grateful for the ongoing support of the Silverball Museum who donated day passes to their wonderful establishment. Also, thanks go to Modern Pinball NYC who also contributed passes to the prize pull. Finally, I am looking forward to visiting Jackbar to spend my hard earned gift certificate that they so generously donated. For those of you who enjoyed or missed the great performance of Fish Detective, I encourage you to visit their Facebook page and Bandcamp page. Thanks for another awesome season, and I’ll see you all at the Winter Kick-Off Party!
